Pretty sure I've walked a million miles today..... we are on appointment #7 of 9... of the final transplant evaluation day. I am very impressed with UNC, the efficiency, the communication and the friendliness and eagerness of the staff to answer questions and help.. a totally different experience than a certain local "facility" we have had the displeasure of experiencing way too much recently. Almost makes me want to move here just to be close to UNC....until I remember the traffic we drove through this morning
So if all goes well today he will be active on the transplant list soon. I could write a book on all the updates since the last, but I'll spare you - basically we continue to navigate all the good, bad and ugly of renal failure and appreciate all the prayers as we settle in and wait for a kidney.
Sorry for the lack of updates...I try to wait till the good days so it's not all depressing and negative.....its been rough lately...BUT what has kept us smiling and having good days are our friends and family...near and far....its been comforting to recieve the smallest of "nudges" of a quick thinking of you text, a simple roll of medical tape from our wishlist arriving in the mail from an old high school friend with an encouraging note, to an invite to dinner (even if I don't respond).
We are trying our best to acknowledge all of your generosity - I have a pack of thank you cards sitting on my table waiting for Michelle to decorate and be addressed to send out - please know we appreciate it all, even if your calls or texts go unanswered - we are just trying to navigate this new chapter and we could not do it without out friends and family even if we are not reciprocating it as we should.
I do want to acknowledge two group of our friends....I shouldn't surprise me at all that we have heard from and had the support in many different ways
#1 our old school Carolina Beach crew / Hoggard friends - people we have not see or heard from in way too long, you don't seem to experience friendships like that anymore now that we all grew up and started familes - but having them have our backs now brings up a lot of good times and memories from when Greg and I first started dating. From visiting us at the hospital, sending gifts, sending a cleaning crew to the house, to offering services and food.....
#2 our foster care community and the families, donors, and my team at Foster Pantry. I still get calls or messages a few times a week asking what we need, if they can take Michelle, how they can help at the Foster Pantry. We have a foster mom who submitted an interest to be a Living Donor, ....so many have stepped up to help keep the Foster Pantry running in my absence with hospitalizations and appointments. Our community partners and fellow nonprofit friends who remind me of all the good in the world.
..and to the rest of you....WE LOVE YOU, thank you for your persistence on the check ins and reminders that we have a billion reasons to smile, the gifts, the invites to dinner to get us out of our house...
